Tyramine-rich Food

Tyramine is an amino acid partially responsible in managing blood pressure by acting as an indirect sympathomimetic as it promotes the release of noradrenaline from synaptic vessels. It’s naturally occuring in the body, and is broken down by monoamine oxidase (MAO).

Contraindications

  • When patients are taking Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitors, which leads to elevated levels of tyramine, causing a hypertensive crisis.
