Inadequate concentration (<60 mg/dL) of glucose in the blood. This may result from starvation, inappropriate eating habits, insulin overdose, rigorous exercise, G.I. upset, among many other things.

Assessment Findings

  • Shaking
  • Diaphoresis
  • Anxiety
  • Dizziness
  • Hunger
  • Tachycardia
  • Impaired Vision
  • Weakness, Fatigue
  • Headache
  • Irritability

Management

  • Simple sugars p.o.: soft drinks, fruit juice, candies, table sugar, pure honey, karo syrup, carbohydrate foods (bread, rice, crackers)
  • D50W 20-50 ml IV push if unconscious, or 1 mg of glucagon.
  • Evaluate effect of management and adjust accordingly.
