An overabundance of glucose (>140 mg/dL) in the blood. Often a result of diabetes mellitus.


Assessment Findings

  • Polydipsia
  • Polyuria, Glycosuria, Ketonuria
  • Polyphagia (if insulin is absent)
  • Dry skin; Warm, flushed skin
  • Hunger
  • Blurred Vision, Soft Eyeballs
  • Drowsiness, Altered Level of Consciousness, Nausea and Vomiting
  • Tachycardia, Abdominal Pain
  • Kussmaul’s Breathing, Fruity Breath Odor (usually related to DKA)

Management

  • Establish and maintain a patent airway
  • Oxygen Therapy
  • NSS + Regular Insulin IV
  • D10W if glucose reaches 250 mg/dL.
  • KCl on slow IV once urine output is adequate
